Story of an honest wood-cutter
Story of an honest wood-cutter
Once there was an honest wood-cutter. He was very poor. One
day he was cutting wood from a tree beside a river. Suddenly his axe fell into
the river. Then he started to cry sitting by the side of the river. He tried
his best to find out the axe but he couldn’t find. Suddenly the goddess of
water appeared. She asked the reason of crying. The wood-cutter told her the
whole story how he lost the axe. She dived into the water and brought a golden
axe. She asked the wood-cutter whether it was his axe or not. But he refused to
take the axe. She again dived and brought a silver axe. This time he again
refused. For the last time she again dived and brought an iron axe. This time
the wood-cutter took it gladly. The goddess was very pleased with his honesty. For
his truthfulness and honesty, she rewarded him the other two axes. Thus, the
wood-cutter became rich.
