Figure of speech: EPIGRAM

Epigram

Epigram: It is a sarcastic expression in a figure of speech. First of all, as a reader when we read, we are shocked to read out it but ultimately it gives us a great meaning. In according to Prof. Bain, “epigram is an apparent contradiction in language which, by causing a temporary shock, rouses our attention to some important meaning underneath”.

Some examples with explanation are given below:

a)      The path of glory but lead to the grave.
If we take a look in this sentence deeply, we can get a great meaning. Always fighting for glory do not bring anything. Glory is like water. Because one cannot hold it. In the same way looking for glory is foolish like work. In the end of the day, we, all have to embrace death. Grave is waiting for us. There we can’t take anything with us. This sentence looks sarcastic but the inner meaning is true undoubtedly.

b)      Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.
In this sentence, we can find a contradiction but authentically it shows us a broader meaning. Here, the statement seems absurd at first. But after a deep look in the sentence, a significant idea is disclosed. From our personal experience, we know that songs made of light thought do not appear so pleasing to us. Rather the songs which are made of gloomy thought stir up our deepest emotions.

c)      Cowards die many times before their death.
The words may seem as absurd. But these make a true sense which has a greater meaning. The main point is the cravens are always fear to do any risky tasks and they can’t take any massive steps. Their soul is like a death soul. They have no contrivance themselves. So, this sentence is an epigram.

d)      Speech was given to man to conceal his thoughts.
In this sentence we can find a contradiction but authentically it shows us a broader meaning. Here we get a statement which seems shocking and absurd, but a significant thought is disclosed. We all are free to talk or give a speech. This power has given by God. He has given this characteristic so that we can express our feelings and our thouths. This lines actually means that speech gives us freedom to express our thoughts. Speech are not only some words, but it is the output of our inner feeling and thought.
